“John Malino is a handsome, dynamic singer-guitarist who, along with the Swing Society, appears every Friday night at Sardi’s. This velvet-voiced baritone is one of the most overlooked talents in the Big Apple. His free spirited, contemporary guitar strumming and good looks are bound to remind some of John Pizzarelli or, more likely, Harry Connick, Jr. (minus the attitude). The John Malino Band is not a dance band per se, but a group of five skilled musicians following Malino’s lead. He often steps out of the spotlight to allow other band members a chance to shine. When he sings people really pay attention, and it’s surprising that he hasn’t yet received the recognition he deserves.
“Some great highlights the night I attended included a bravura reading of ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ that featured sizzling solos on the piano and guitar. When he tore into a great original tuner, ‘Long Distance Blues,’ the crowd went wild with enthusiasm. Other standouts that drew cheers included ‘Witchcraft,’ which showed off his smooth, mellow vocals, and a stylish medley from ‘Porgy and Bess’ that gave all the band members a chance to show off. You can’t help liking the band and especially this multi-talented charismatic guy with the winning smile and warm personality. He’s a winner.”
